Made In Abyss Episode 1 Review

The enormous cave system, known as the Abyss, is the only unexplored place in the world. Nobody knows how deep down goes this titanic pit, inhabited by strange and wondrous creatures and full of mysterious ancient relics which purpose in unknown to modern man. Generations of bold adventurers have been drawn by the cryptic depths of the Abyss. In course of time those bold enough to explore the dangerous pit came to be known as “Cave Raiders.”

In Oosu, the town at the edge of the Abyss, there lives a little orphan named Rico, who dreams of becoming as great a cave raider as her mother was and solving the great mystery of the pit. One day exploring the murky depths she stumbles upon a little boy, who turns out to be a robot…-MAL Database

If the first episode is any indication, I think I’ve found the best anime of summer 2017.

We’re introduced to Riko, who is determined to follow her mother deeper in the abyss, but currently lacks the skill set and has a mischievous strike that gets her in trouble. Her two friends Nat- who is a little grumpy, and Sigu- who is bright and appears to be on the smarter side.

Then we have Reg, a robot boy found by Riko. While Reg appears to be Robot at first glance, parts of his body are clearly human and seems to be suffering from memory loss currently.

The characters are all quite refreshing and their interaction keeps you interested. On the other hand, I can’t tell what their ages are as the character design is follows the chibi route. Considering, Riko was apparently strung naked as punishment, I would wager she is about eleven as I doubt they would do that to a grown girl, unless its acceptable in this world.

I love how we are taught about the world through the characters, and get little pieces of information to put it all together. And while the character design has me confused on their age, the art in general is absolutey breathtaking.

Then opening OST gives you a sense of peace, and the ending song is quite good.

All in all, we have a good anime at hand.

Definitely my favourite anime of the season so far as well. What a stellar first episode – gorgeous set pieces, no heavy-handed exposition, and a story completely unlike anything else airing this season. I’m really curious and excited to see more.
